On Sunday, 11 March, the Islamic University of Gaza began activities for the Medical Awareness Day organised by the College of Medicine. The opening was attended by Professor, Dr. Nasir Farhat, head of the University, Dr. Fadl Na’eem, dean of the Medical Faculty, Dr. Basim Na’eem, director of the Hayaat Centre for Training on Administration of Crises and Catastrophes in the Islamic University, Dr. Sa’eed Namrooty, director of the Department of General Relations and Central Conferences, Muhammad Ghanim, head of the Palestinian Medical Forum, the student framework in the College of Medicine of the University, a group of academics and administrators and the students of the University.
The Medical Day aims to make the students aware of many widespread diseases, how to avoid and prevent them and to equip them with knowledge of first aid during sudden accidents. This comes as a co-operative partnership between the College of Medicine, the Students’ Medical Club and Hayaat Centre for Training on Administration of Crises and Catastrophes. The Day included many angles such as hypertension, diabetes, smoking and dentition, first aid, eye tests, blood donation and nutrition. It also included a live demonstration to deal with emergencies and how to treat injuries in the first instances.
For his part, Farhat praised the role of the College of Medicine in holding an excellent awareness activity that served the students in informing them about the common diseases and how to prevent them, in addition to obtaining valuable knowledge of first aid. Farhat indicated that the Day includes live examples and demonstrations by the students of the College of Medicine that has assisted the students in obtaining the information and using it when required.
From his side, Na’eem explained that the Awareness Day expressed the philosophy of the University and the College of Medicine in presenting service learning to various levels by serving the public and answering questions from different angles. Na’eem expounded saying that the Medical Day provided a number of awareness stations presenting medical conditions, with simple important information concerning everyone. It also provided practical tests to prevent widespread diseases in society, saying that there was a partnership between the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Al Azhar University for the sake of the health of individuals.
Ghanim spoke about the great response and interaction from the students for the Medical Day, because it presented a number of practical angles for them. He pointed out that at the end of the day, information will be gathered about the students. Using this information, the effects on the health of the students will be studied.
